Marty Schottenheimer, veteran NFL coach, dead at 77

Legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer has died due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease, according to reports.

Schottenheimer had been moved to hospice care last week amid his battle with the disease, and ultimately passed away Monday in North Carolina. He was 77 years old.

Schottenheimer spent 21 seasons as an NFL head coach in stints with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers. He also spent time with the Giants as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator from 1975 to 1977.

Over his time as a head coach, he won 200 games, posting a winning percentage of .613. He was the NFL’s Coach of the Year in 2004 with the Chargers after leading the team to a 12-4 record a year after a 4-12 finish.

His son, Brian, was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks until he was let go by the team following the 2020 season.
